Abortion has increasingly been legalized in the USA over the years. It was legalized in the New York Senate in 1970 for abortions to take place up to the 24th week of pregnancy. Abortion was later made legal across the United States on January 22, 1973, under the Roe V. Wade landmark decision of the Supreme Court. In 1972, more than 100,000 women traveled to New York to have legal abortions as abortion was not legal in all US states. In 2001, New York City had a record of 91,792 induced abortions – the highest number in the USA. Sadly, New York was famously referred to as the abortion capital of the USA.
In January 2019, a newer, stronger, pro-abortion law was enacted. The law allows abortions to take place after 24 weeks, stating that this can be done if the fetus isn’t viable, or if the pregnant person’s life or health (including mental health) is at risk. Minors are also allowed to have abortions without the consent or notification of their parent or guardian. New York also forces all state-regulated insurers to cover abortions. This gives a wide scope for pregnant and vulnerable women, as well as underage females, to be coerced into having an abortion, a decision that many regret. This leads many women to suffer emotionally for the rest of their lives.
