That is real detachment. In order to meet God, one should detach oneself carefully and with discrimination. Then alone will he receive the real benefit; this is, he will be able to rise above the cycle of birth and death. In order to be truly detached, it is necessary to be detached from everything in this world. And to do this it is not necessary to leave one’s home, society or other connections. Saints do not advocate that type of detachment. The real detachment is to detach one’s soul and mind from the love of the world and its objects. The outward detachment of persons, who are detached from the worldly objects indiscriminately and leave them outwardly only, can never bring peace. For then, attachment is still felt in the mind, and that cannot be the foundation of the true inner detachment.
