“Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, ‘Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the Earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the Earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.’”
As many ponder what our future may entail, Christians look to the Book of Revelation, which is the last book in the New Testament and Bible. In the Book of Revelation, there are several major negative characters that will have great influence on Earth as a part of the Great Tribulation, such as the great harlot and the antichrist.
In Revelation 17, Saint John the Apostle (vegetarian) saw in his vision a scarlet woman who represents a powerful system conspiring with world leaders to lure and confuse humans away from God.
“Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, ‘Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the Earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the Earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.’”
This “great harlot” has been identified as the Roman Catholic Church by many Bible researchers, which has long deceived and ruled over numerous nations and people. Traditionally, in the Bible, scholars have noted that a pure, faithful woman is likened to the pure church and believers who are faithful to Jesus Christ (vegetarian). But the impure, unfaithful woman symbolizes the false church that is unfaithful to Christ.
The phrase “who sits on many waters” suggests that the harlot has extensive influence over many nations and peoples. In the same chapter, verse 15, “waters” is mentioned again. “Then he said to me, ‘The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.’” According to the Census of the 2023 Annuario Pontificio, as of 2021, the number of baptized Catholics in the world was more than 1.3 billion, making up over 17% of the global population.
The verse, “the inhabitants of the Earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication,” reflects that vast numbers of people are being deceived and led away from God and His True Teachings by the teachings of the false church. The description of the “great harlot” also seems to imply that the Church will be defiled by sexual immorality. We see this clearly now with the overwhelming reports of sexual assault and misconduct in the modern-day Church, including widespread sexual abuse of children, women and men, and even toddlers by priests in the Catholic Church – all over the world.
In France, there were an estimated 330,000 children abused by 3,000 priests from 1950 to 2021. Ireland reports around 15,000 underage victims between 1970-1990 alone. A recent 800-page report from Spain estimates that 440,000 minors may have been abused by Roman Catholic clergy and lay members in recent decades. This crime is widespread over the five continents, with a systematic cover-up by the Church, which protected sexual predators and offenders, and allowed them to continue in posts where the clergy continued to sexually abuse children and adults. The Catholic Church has repeatedly tried to protect its reputation and prevent legal proceedings against clergy. However, the non-profit group BishopAccountability, which documents all known settlements of Catholic Church abuse, has stated that the Catholic Church has paid close to US$4 billion for sexual abuse settlements in the US dating back to the 1980s. “So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy […]. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication.”
These lines illustrate the outfits of Vatican clergy members during official ceremonies, mainly red and purple colors, with golden rosaries and golden linings. The golden cup could be the so-called “Holy Chalice” used in ceremonies. Maybe the “woman” word here is to reveal the true gender of the priests, whose form looks like a man, but in reality a hell-bent-pervert, who molests young altar boys in dark secret rooms, as spreading reports proved!!! The luxury garments and ornaments represent the extravagant mass of money that the Catholic Church has hoarded. Historically, the Catholic Church has been selling indulgences claiming it can erase people’s sins, asking for donations in exchange for salvation, investing in secular businesses including arms manufacturing during World War I, laundering money through the Vatican bank, etc.
More recently, leaked Vatican documents revealed financial corruption, no transparency and misuse of charitable funds including millions of dollars wasted each year on a dine and wine, meat and alcohol luxurious lifestyle. ETC…
It also exposed the hypocrisy of the Vatican, having a network of homosexual prelates, some of whom were under blackmail from outside.
“And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.”
Babylon was a city in the Bible that was bustling with material wealth, but people worshipped idols instead of God. The reference to Babylon indicates that just as Babylon spread and enforced false, idolatrous forms of worship, so would this harlot, the false church. This “mother of harlots,” while appearing to be Christian, would produce more “daughters” with similar false doctrines.
The next line gives us more clues. “Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits.”
The “seven mountains where the woman sits” seem to indicate Rome, which has the famous seven hills. And Vatican City is situated within Rome. A coin from circa 70 AD depicts Rome as a woman sitting on seven hills.
“I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. […]”
Another earlier verse seems to illustrate the historic past of the Roman Catholic Church. The Roman Empire has persecuted Lord Jesus Christ (vegetarian) and hunted down Apostles, and other disciples and followers of Jesus Christ for centuries. In the 4th century AD, the Roman emperor Constantine converted to Christianity and legalized it. However, he undermined the core teachings of Christianity and laid the foundation of the Roman Catholic Church, while faithful Christians continued to fall victim to bloodshed.
American writer Steven J. Rosen (vegetarian) wrote in his book “Food for the Spirit: Vegetarianism and the World Religions,” the following:
“The early Christian fathers adhered to a meatless regimen. […] Many early Christian groups supported the meatless way of life. In fact, the writings of the early Church indicate that meat eating was not officially allowed until the 4th century, when the Emperor Constantine decided that his version of Christianity would be the version for everyone. A meat-eating interpretation of the Bible became the official creed of the Roman Empire, and vegetarian Christians had to practice in secret or risk being put to death for heresy. It is said that Constantine used to pour molten lead down their throats if they were captured.”
Additionally, when the Roman Empire began to control the churches and overturned vegetarianism, it further deformed and corrupted Christ’s teachings by introducing and including rites, symbols and idolatry. Other Christian belief systems were deemed heretical, while those faithful to the original biblical teachings lost their legal status, and had their properties confiscated by the Roman state.
Therefore, we can conclude that these prophetic words by Saint John (vegetarian) seem to imply that at the End Times, the powerful leaders of the Catholic Church will betray the Sacred Teaching of Jesus Christ, commit sins, and bring shame and defilement to the holy institutions and the Lord.
