The gut microbiota and the integrity of the gut lining are strongly tied to our well-being. A healthy gut can contribute to better digestion, more efficient absorption, and a stronger immune system, which is essential for preventing diseases and boosting overall wellness. Fermented foods, such as vegan yogurt, have been proven to have a positive impact on health due to their ability to foster good bacteria in the digestive system.

Traditionally, yogurt cultures consume lactose, a sugar found in dairy milk. However, in vegan yogurt, the base shifts to plant-based milks derived from soy, coconut, oat, peas, almonds, or cashews. The yogurt cultures interact with the natural sugars present in these plant sources or those added for fermentation. This interaction leads to the production of lactic acid, which imparts vegan yogurt with its mildly sour flavor and distinctive texture.

When we enjoy vegan yogurt, we are actually consuming beneficial live microbes known as probiotics, which can work wonders for our bodies. According to the World Health Organization, probiotics are “live microorganisms which, when consumed in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.” A study published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport demonstrated that probiotics may help reduce the duration and incidence of infectious symptoms, such as respiratory tract illnesses and gastrointestinal issues, among endurance athletes. According to Harvard University researchers in the United States, probiotics can be beneficial for skin conditions like eczema. Moreover, they have been shown to inhibit the growth of Helicobacter pylori, a type of bacteria that tends to damage the stomach lining, leading to peptic ulcers.

To steer clear of consuming excessive added sugars, it is advisable to choose unsweetened or unflavored versions. You can always personalize the taste by adding natural sweeteners like fruits according to your preferences. When picking a product, choose those that state “living cultures” or “contains active cultures” on the package. Additionally, make sure to read the labels to ensure that the yogurt is vegan and GMO-free. This way you can avoid detrimental dairy ingredients and genetically modified substances. Opting for organic options can also help in steering clear of possible harmful chemicals.
